An Inspiring Neighborhood Forum on February 28

On February 28. Campus MLK and Fab-5 hosted our second Hilltop Neighborhood Forum at Fabitat. It was great to see some of our new friends return, like representatives from 2nd Cycle, the Tacoma Public Library, Write@253, Fab-5, Post Defiance, and the DASH Center for the Arts.

And we made new friends with representatives from the YOU Project who is planning a community mural downtown, McCarver Peacemakers, and local community gardening group Castings.

We reviewed upcoming spring events, talked about how we can support and connect on those activities.

Also we began an exciting conversation about ways we can interconnect and support the development of youth programming in Hilltop, especially for organizations like 2nd Cycle who are now established as a nonprofit and working toward creating youth program curriculum.

We shared stories of kids from the neighborhood moving from one organization to the next, enjoying activities, making friends, and sharing with the staff and volunteers from the different groups. We also discussed Fab-5’s powerful new video project, “Meanwhile: The Lasting Impact of Juvenile Records” and brainstormed ideas about outreach and screeening activities for the film once it’s complete.

The vision of Campus MLK – to, block by block, build connections for Hilltop youth to connect to the best in local culture – is taking hold and a support network is forming between neighbors. It looks like it’s going to be a really cool spring on the Hill!
